The White House Just Dropped a Plan to Control AI Across All 50 States Before They Can Do It Themselves

If you thought AI regulation was messy before, things just got a whole lot more interesting.

On Friday, the White House released what it's calling a national AI legislation framework, basically a blueprint it wants Congress to follow when writing the rules for artificial intelligence in the U.S. And the biggest move? It wants federal law to override every single state-level AI regulation.

That means states like California and Colorado, which have been leading the charge on AI rules, could see their laws wiped off the books if Congress goes along with this.

The framework focuses on a few big areas: protecting kids from AI-generated content, making sure AI doesn't jack up everyone's electricity bills (those data centers use a LOT of power), and keeping things light enough that companies can still innovate without drowning in red tape.

Critics are already calling it too soft, saying it basically lets Big Tech write its own rules. Supporters say a patchwork of 50 different state laws would be a nightmare for companies trying to build AI products.

Love it or hate it, this is the first time a U.S. administration has laid out a real plan for how AI should be governed at the federal level. And it's going to spark a massive fight in Congress.

As reported by Reuters and NBC News.
