Elon Musk's Wild Plan to Launch AI Data Centers Into Actual Outer Space

AI is eating so much electricity that Elon Musk thinks the only solution is putting massive computer farms in orbit around Earth, powered by the sun.

Elon Musk's Wild Plan to Launch AI Data Centers Into Actual Outer Space

AI needs power. Like, an insane amount of power. Data centers already eat up about 4% of all the electricity in the United States, and that number is expected to more than double by 2030. The AI industry is literally running out of juice, and now Elon Musk has what might be the most Elon Musk solution ever: just put the computers in space.

Yeah, you read that right. Musk is arguing that the future of AI computing power is in orbit, where solar panels can soak up unlimited energy from the sun without worrying about power grids, permits, or angry neighbors who don't want a massive data center humming next door.

He's even predicting that within five years, there could be MORE computing power floating in space than sitting on Earth. That's a bold claim even for a guy known for bold claims.

But here's the reality check from Fortune's deep dive: experts say this technology is feasible but absolutely not ready for prime time. We're talking decades, not years, before orbital data centers could actually make a dent. The engineering challenges are enormous, from getting the hardware up there to dealing with radiation, heat management, and the small issue of doing repairs when your server farm is orbiting at 17,000 miles per hour.

Meanwhile, back on Earth, tech companies are on track to spend more than $5 trillion on traditional data centers by the end of the decade. Big names like former Google CEO Eric Schmidt and Amazon's Jeff Bezos are also eyeing space, but nobody is close to making it work yet.
