Big Tech Is Spending $100 Million to Control How the Government Regulates AI
AI companies are flooding the 2026 midterm elections with cash, and Democrats and Republicans are both cashing in. Here's why that should worry you.
The AI industry just went all-in on American politics, and the numbers are staggering.
A new political group called Innovation Council Action, tied to two of President Trump's advisors, announced it would spend at least $100 million on the 2026 midterm elections. That's just one group. Across the board, AI companies are pouring millions into both Democratic and Republican campaigns.
Why? Because whoever writes the rules for AI wins the game. And right now, nobody agrees on what those rules should look like.
On one side, you have companies like Anthropic donating $20 million to groups pushing for stricter AI regulation. On the other side, you have industry-backed PACs running ads against politicians who want more oversight. Even within the same industry, companies are fighting each other over what the future should look like.
Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez called the money 'toxic,' warning that voters are catching on to the influence game. University of Rochester professor David Primo put it simply: 'The stakes are really high because once a regulatory system gets entrenched, it's really hard to change it.'
Bottom line: the companies building the most powerful technology in history are now spending record amounts to make sure they get to write the rules for it. Whether that's good or terrifying depends on who you ask.
