This Giant Company Just Told 780,000 Employees: Learn AI or Forget About Getting Promoted

Accenture is now tracking how often employees log into AI tools, and it's tying the results directly to promotions.

This Giant Company Just Told 780,000 Employees: Learn AI or Forget About Getting Promoted

If you thought you could ignore AI and coast through your career, Accenture just made that a lot harder. The consulting giant, which employs about 780,000 people worldwide, has started monitoring how often its senior staff log into AI tools on a weekly basis.

The message is blunt: if you're not regularly using AI, you can kiss that promotion goodbye.

Accenture already trained 550,000 of its workers on generative AI tools last year. But training wasn't enough. Now the company wants proof that people are actually using what they learned. Senior managers and associate directors have been told that "regular adoption" of AI tools will be a "visible input" in promotion decisions this summer.

And it gets worse for the holdouts. Last September, CEO Julie Sweet said the company would be "exiting" employees who can't be retrained in the skills they need. In plain English: learn AI or get fired.

This isn't just an Accenture thing. It's a preview of where every big company is headed. The days of treating AI as optional are over. Your next performance review might literally depend on how often you talk to a chatbot.
