Europe Just Made It Illegal for AI to Create Child Abuse Images and Big Tech Is Scrambling

The European Union just took a massive step that could reshape how AI image generators work worldwide. EU governments have officially proposed banning AI systems that generate child sexual abuse material, adding this rule to their already strict AI Act that was adopted two years ago.

This is not just talk. On March 11, EU lawmakers struck a political deal on a package of amendments that also bans AI-generated non-consensual intimate images of anyone, not just minors. Think deepfakes of real people in compromising situations. All of it would be illegal under the updated rules.

Why does this matter for you? Because every major AI image tool, from Midjourney to DALL-E to Stable Diffusion, will need to prove they have safeguards in place to prevent this kind of content from being created. Companies that do not comply could face enormous fines.

The move comes as AI-generated imagery has gotten scarily realistic. What used to look obviously fake now passes for real photos, and bad actors have been using these tools to create harmful content at an industrial scale.
