France Just Bet $830 Million That Europe Can Beat America at AI
French AI startup Mistral just secured a massive loan to buy thousands of Nvidia chips and build a data center that could change the global AI race.
Europe has been watching from the sidelines as American and Chinese companies dominate the AI race. That might be about to change. French startup Mistral just locked in $830 million in debt financing to buy 13,800 Nvidia chips and build a massive data center near Paris.
To put that in perspective, 13,800 Nvidia AI chips is an absolutely enormous amount of computing power. We're talking about enough hardware to train and run AI models that can compete with anything coming out of Silicon Valley.
But here's what makes this really interesting: this isn't venture capital money from optimistic investors. This is a loan from seven major banks. That means traditional finance now sees AI infrastructure as a safe enough bet to lend hundreds of millions against. The AI industry just graduated from "risky startup" to "bankable infrastructure."
Mistral isn't stopping at Paris either. They're planning facilities in Sweden and aiming for 200 megawatts of computing power across Europe by the end of 2027. For context, that's enough electricity to power a small city, all dedicated to AI.
