France Just Made a Wild Bet That Nuclear Power Will Make It the AI Capital of Europe

While other countries struggle to power their data centers, France says its nuclear surplus gives it an unfair advantage in the global AI race.

France Just Made a Wild Bet That Nuclear Power Will Make It the AI Capital of Europe

AI data centers are hungry. Really hungry. Training a single large AI model can use as much electricity as a small city. And right now, the biggest bottleneck in the entire AI industry is not chips or talent. It is power.

Enter France, which just showed up to the AI party with a very big flex. President Emmanuel Macron announced at the World Nuclear Energy Summit in Paris that France exported 90 terawatt-hours of clean electricity last year, and he wants to use that surplus to turn France into the data center capital of Europe.

While the U.S. is scrambling to build new power plants and countries like Germany are restarting coal facilities to keep up with AI demand, France is sitting on a mountain of nuclear energy that is already built, already running, and produces almost zero carbon emissions.

This is a genuinely smart play. Every major AI company, from OpenAI to Google to Meta, is desperately looking for places to build new data centers with reliable, clean power. France just raised its hand and said "we have been ready for this since the 1970s."

If Macron pulls this off, France could become to AI infrastructure what Silicon Valley is to software: the place everyone has to be. As reported by TechStartups.
