27 States Are Writing Laws to Control AI Chatbots Right Now and You Probably Had No Idea
While you were scrolling TikTok, lawmakers in over half the country quietly started regulating the AI tools you use every day.
Here is something that might surprise you: right now, 78 different bills about AI chatbots are being debated in 27 states across America. That is not a typo. Almost every other state in the country is actively trying to figure out what rules should govern the AI tools millions of people use daily.
Washington State just passed two major bills this week alone. One requires companies to tell you when you are talking to an AI instead of a real person. The other is specifically about protecting kids from AI chatbots, with new safety rules and self-harm prevention protocols. Oregon passed a similar kids-safety bill just last week.
Utah went on an absolute tear, passing nine AI-related bills in a single session. Those cover everything from banning AI deepfakes to making sure your doctor (not a machine) is the one making medical decisions about your health.
Virginia is also in the mix with three AI bills heading to the governor right now.
The big picture? Governments are moving way faster on AI regulation than most people realize. While tech companies race to build the next big AI model, lawmakers are scrambling to put guardrails in place before things get out of hand. Whether you think that is a good thing or a bad thing probably depends on how much you trust politicians to understand technology.
