Amazon Is Making Another Phone and It's Stuffed With AI (What Could Go Wrong?)
Remember the Fire Phone disaster? Amazon apparently doesn't. They're trying again with a new AI-powered smartphone codenamed 'Transformer.'
Amazon is about to make the same mistake twice. Maybe.
According to Reuters, the e-commerce giant is working on a brand new smartphone codenamed "Transformer." If that name doesn't ring a bell, maybe the Fire Phone does. That was Amazon's first attempt at making a phone back in 2014, and it was one of the biggest flops in tech history. It lasted about a year before Amazon pulled the plug.
So what's different this time? AI. Lots of AI. The new device is reportedly going to lean heavily on artificial intelligence features, which makes sense given that Amazon already has Alexa living in millions of homes. The idea seems to be: what if Alexa was in your pocket, but way smarter?
Details are thin right now. No pricing, no release date, no specs. Just the codename and the promise of AI features nobody asked for. If you've ever accidentally triggered your Echo speaker and had it try to order paper towels at 2 AM, you might have some concerns about giving Amazon even more access to your daily life.
But here's the thing: if history is any guide, these phones might end up being incredible bargains on the secondhand market. The original Fire Phone went from $199 to literally one cent on Amazon within months of launch.
So maybe don't pre-order, but keep your eyes open for a deal.
