Google Is Building an AI Shopping Agent That Will Buy Stuff for You on Shopee
Google just partnered with Southeast Asia's biggest ecommerce platform to build an AI that shops for you. Not recommends. Actually shops.
Google and Sea, the company that owns Shopee, just announced they're building an AI agentic shopping prototype together. That's corporate speak for: an AI that will browse, compare, and buy products for you.
This isn't a chatbot that answers questions about products. This is an AI agent that takes actions. You tell it what you want, and it goes and gets it. It searches, compares prices, reads reviews, and handles the checkout.
Shopee is massive in Southeast Asia, basically the Amazon of that region, so this isn't some small experiment. This is Google and one of the world's biggest ecommerce platforms betting that the future of online shopping is handing your credit card to an AI and letting it do the work.
The partnership also covers gaming through Sea's Garena platform and financial services through their Monee division. Google is essentially embedding its AI across Sea's entire business.
Why this matters for everyone: if AI shopping agents work at scale, every ecommerce platform will need one. The way people buy things online is about to fundamentally change, and the companies that figure it out first will have a massive advantage.
