Morgan Stanley Just Dropped a Bombshell: An AI 'Intelligence Explosion' Is Coming and Nobody Is Ready

Morgan Stanley just released a report that should probably come with a seatbelt warning.

The investment bank is saying that a massive leap in artificial intelligence is about to hit, possibly within the next few months, and almost nobody is ready for it. Their researchers pointed to a recent Elon Musk interview where he explained that throwing 10 times more computing power at AI training basically doubles how smart the AI becomes. And apparently, the math behind that claim is checking out.

Here is the scary part: executives at the biggest AI labs in America are privately telling investors to brace for progress that will 'shock' them. OpenAI's newest model, GPT-5.4 'Thinking,' just scored 83% on a test that measures whether AI can do real, economically valuable work at expert level. That is at or above human expert performance.

But all that brainpower needs electricity, and there is not enough of it. Morgan Stanley projects a power shortfall of 9 to 18 gigawatts in the US through 2028. Companies are so desperate they are converting old Bitcoin mining facilities into AI data centers and firing up gas turbines just to keep the lights on.

The job market implications are just as intense. Morgan Stanley predicts AI will become a 'powerful deflationary force' as it replicates human work for pennies on the dollar. Sam Altman thinks companies of just 1 to 5 people will be able to outcompete massive corporations. And one xAI co-founder suggested AI could start improving itself without human help as early as 2027.
