Britain Promised Billions for AI Supercomputers. Investigators Found a Scaffolding Yard Instead.

This might be the most awkward AI story of the year.

The UK government has been loudly promising that artificial intelligence will supercharge the British economy. They announced billions in investment, new datacentres, and a cutting-edge supercomputer that was supposed to be up and running by the end of the year.

Then The Guardian actually went to check on these projects. What they found at the site of the much-hyped supercomputer? A scaffolding yard. Not a construction site for a supercomputer. A yard. For scaffolding.

The investigation revealed that many of the "multibillion" AI investment figures the government had been touting were built on what reporters called "phantom investments," numbers that don't hold up under scrutiny.

This matters beyond the UK because governments everywhere are racing to position themselves as AI leaders. The US, China, the EU, and others are all throwing billions at AI infrastructure. But if the UK example is any indicator, some of those promises might be more PowerPoint than progress.

The lesson? When a politician says "we're investing billions in AI," maybe ask to see the receipts first.

As reported by The Guardian.
