OpenAI Just Killed Sora and Nobody Saw It Coming (Not Even Disney)
OpenAI is pulling the plug on its AI video generator Sora, just months after a massive Disney partnership. The tech will live on, but not in the way you think.
In a move that stunned the tech world, OpenAI announced it's shutting down Sora, the AI video generation tool that was supposed to revolutionize how we make movies, ads, and social media content.
Here's where it gets wild: just three months ago, OpenAI and Disney signed a huge three-year deal letting Sora users create videos with over 200 Disney characters, including Marvel heroes, Pixar favorites, and Star Wars icons. That deal? Dead on arrival. Disney has already pulled out and dropped its planned $1 billion investment.
So why kill it? OpenAI says they're pivoting the video tech to something potentially bigger: training robots. Because video provides a decent simulation of how the real world works, they'll use Sora's underlying technology to teach robots how to do physical tasks. Think less "make me a TikTok" and more "teach a robot to fold laundry."
This YouTube video covering the announcement racked up nearly 350,000 views in just 14 hours, showing how much people cared about Sora's future.
"We're saying goodbye to Sora," OpenAI wrote on X. "We'll share more soon, including timelines for the app."
