Sam Altman and the Anthropic CEO Couldn't Even Hold Hands at a Photo Op
India's Prime Minister asked all the AI leaders to hold hands for a unity photo. Everyone did except Sam Altman and Dario Amodei. The rivalry is that real.
At the India AI Impact Summit this week, Prime Minister Modi asked all the tech CEOs on stage to join hands for a symbolic unity photo. Google's people did it. Meta's people did it. Most executives grabbed hands without thinking.
But Sam Altman from OpenAI and Dario Amodei from Anthropic? They stood right next to each other and kept their hands very visibly apart.
This is not subtle. These two companies are in the middle of the biggest AI arms race on the planet. Anthropic was literally founded by people who left OpenAI because they disagreed with how things were being run. The beef is real and apparently extends to basic photo ops.
The moment went viral immediately because it perfectly captures where the AI industry is right now. Everyone talks about collaboration and safety and working together, but behind closed doors it's a knife fight for market share, talent, and the future of the technology.
Sometimes a photo op tells you more than any earnings call ever could.
As reported by Reuters and CNBC.
