OpenAI is rolling out advertising to all free and budget ChatGPT users. Your favorite AI assistant is about to get a lot more... commercial.

ChatGPT Is About to Start Showing You Ads (And There's Nothing You Can Do About It)

If you've been enjoying ChatGPT for free, get ready for a change you probably won't love.

OpenAI just announced it's expanding advertisements to every user on the free and lower-cost "Go" subscription tiers in the United States. That means the AI chatbot millions of people use every day is about to start selling you stuff between answers.

The company has partnered with ad tech firm Criteo to handle the placements, and advertisers are reportedly being asked to spend between $50,000 and $100,000 per campaign. So yeah, this isn't a small experiment. It's a full-blown ad business.

OpenAI says the ads won't influence ChatGPT's actual responses, and your conversations won't be shared with advertisers. But let's be honest: once ads enter the picture, the line between "helpful assistant" and "salesperson" starts to blur pretty fast.

The reason behind all of this? Money. Running massive AI models is incredibly expensive, and subscriptions alone aren't cutting it. OpenAI needs new revenue streams, and ads are the oldest trick in the internet playbook.

Premium subscribers won't see ads, which means OpenAI is basically creating a two-tier system: pay up or put up with commercials. Sound familiar? That's exactly what happened with YouTube, Spotify, and basically every streaming service.
